The ACHS Spring News Letter 2011

Dear ACHS students, campers, players and parents:
Summer is quickly approaching and we are getting ready for another awesome camp season. Registrations are coming in fast and furious and we are expecting most of our camps to be sold out again this year. We hope that you will be a part of it especially since this will be our thirtieth year. Please remember that applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Last year several families were very disappointed as they had to be placed on waiting lists.

Our academic school sports teams have cleaned up so far this year.
St. Peter’s ACHS College School students have really made a name for themselves so far this year winning six out of eight hockey tournaments and ending up as finalists in the other two. Several weeks ago ACHS students also challenged the York Regional Police to a do or die hockey game. After three hard hitting periods ACHS students ended up with a five all tie. THANKS YORK REGIONAL POLICE for a great hockey game!

Last week our school also won the SSAF ball hockey championships for both the U-12 and U-14 divisions. After a hard fought battle in the fall, our U-12′s won the SSAF cross-country championship. Giorgio Aromatario particularly made a name for himself competing as a thirteen year old against the U-16 division and placing eighth overall. Even in chess our school placed first in the U-8, and in the U-14 divisions. We congratulate our students for their spectacular effort and wish them the best of luck for the up-coming track and field championships. (A news paper article also appeared the April issue of the Sporting Scene outlining some of the accomplishments in hockey this year.)

After serving the community for the past twenty years in the GTA, St. Peter’s ACHS College School will be relocating to Haliburton Ontario. As of August 1st, 2011 the school will be operating out of the Pinestone Resort and Conference Centre in Haliburton Ontario just two hours Northeast of Toronto. It will be sad to leave the Maple Community where the school has operated for the past sixteen years. There have been many great memories that will never be forgotten. We would like thank the many students, players, and campers that we have been permitted to service over these many years. It is because of you that there was an ACHS.

However, thanks to Pinestone manager Mr. Vismeg and owner operator Mr. Vranich, St. Peter’s ACHS College School now has a facility beyond its wildest dreams. With over 160 acres, an eighteen hole golf course, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, numerous class rooms and offices, our school finds itself now in a modern day world class facility. Sir Sam’s Ski Hill is less than twenty minutes away and the arena less than ten minutes away. We could not have found a better opportunity or location. I am also pleased to announce that a hand full of students and their families have chosen to keep St. Peter’s ACHS College School as part of their education by attending the school in Haliburton through its residency program.

On behalf of all the ACHS staff we thank you and hope you will have a great summer.
Sincerely yours,

Peter Thyrring (Tyro) ACHS Director

Dear ACHS students, campers, and parents:

It is with great pleasure that I present to you our winter news letter. This will mark our Thirtieth year of serving the community through its Hockey, Sports Adventure, Wilderness and Paintball Camps. This fall will also mark the Twentieth Anniversary of our Academic Sports School. It is because of you and the many others before you that we have been able to reach this huge milestone. Many great events and activities are planned throughout the year to help celebrate these anniversaries. We thank our many families (some from as far away as the USA, Europe, Mexico, and Asia) for their support and patronage over the years and hope that we may be able to serve you for many more years to come.

Once again most of our camps were completely sold out during 2010 and we are hoping to do even better this year. We are pleased to enclose our new brochures for the 2011 season and hope that you will be a part of it. Registrations have already begun to arrive and if you want to register for any of our programs we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. Unfortunately we were not able to accommodate everyone last year and numerous families were placed on a waiting list. All registrations will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.

This past Fall our School Cross Country team won the ACHS Fun Run as well as the Jr. SSAF U-12 Championship Banner. It was complimented with Giorgio Aromatario (an underage thirteen year old) competing in the SSAF U-16 division and finishing tenth over all. This cross country season ACHS students Giorgio, Nicholas, and Anthony Aromatario, GianPaulo Iaboni, Christian Monachino, Drew Van Lieshout, Matthew Peticca and Christian Buchella came home with ten medals overall making this our best Cross Country Season ever.

Remembrance Day this year was more important than ever. With the many losses in Afghanistan and the many veterans passing on, it was extremely important to ACHS students to show their support and respect at the Toronto Remembrance Day Service this year. This important twelve year tradition concluded with ACHS students thanking veterans and having lunch with Mayor Miller.

Throughout this year ACHS students have attend numerous learning and recreational events outside of the school building to help in their learning and personal development. Some of these trips included a trip to the Aviation Museum in Hamilton, the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Curling, Skiing/Snowboarding, and Snowmobiling up in Haliburton, as well as an ACHS night out to watch a Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Game.

So far in Hockey, our Jr. and Sr. school hockey teams remain undefeated in 2011. With only seven players and a goalie on the Jr. team and ten players and a goalie on the Sr. team we won this years’ ACHS Challenge Cup Tournament. During the Jr. game with less than a minute to go, Ryan Granelli scored the winning goal to beat St. Rita
2-1. For the Sr. game Nicholas Aromatario scored the winning goal in overtime to beat Leo Baeck South 2-1. Both these exciting games helped bring this years’ tournament to a successful conclusion. (Each team is scheduled for at least three more tournaments this year and we hope to remain a force to be reckoned with.)

New this year was our school entry into the SSAF Ski and Snowboarding competition. With over a hundred and fifty competitors, A.J. and Lucas Sanci along with Paolo Tenaglia represented ACHS. Even though we could not clinch a medal this time, their competition and effort was valiant. We are looking for Gold in 2012.

This Spring our Haliburton Ball Hockey League will be back for its second season. With just over sixty players ACHS launched its first year in Haliburton known as the “Haliburton ACHS Minor Ball Hockey League”. Registered as part of the OBHA and Ball Hockey Canada we hope to double in size this year with the addition of a Tyke and Bantam Division. To register please call the school at 905-832-8121 or Stacey Parish at 705-457-5157.
(There are many other centres for kids to play in. More information may be found at youthballhockey.ca)

As the Winter comes to an end and the Summer approaches, I hope that you will continue to be a part of our ACHS family. On behalf of all our staff we hope that you have a great spring and summer and we look forward to serving you in the near future. For additional information about any of our programs you may visit the web at www.achscanada.com or call us direct at 905-832-8121.

Dear ACHS students, campers and parents,

The year 2010 is off to a great start here at the ACHS and so far we are doing even better than last year. Our March Break Hockey Camp was once again completely sold out and it looks like many of our summer camps will also be sold out again this year. If you are still hoping to register and don’t want to be disappointed and placed on a waiting list, you should register as soon as possible. Limited spots are still available.

Our St. Peter’ ACHS College School program continues to thrive and do well.
Being a small school continues to be a huge benefit to all our students. Our small classes and individualized programs have rocketed some of our students well ahead academically of the better main stream schools. Also, this past winter while in Lake Placid New York, our students’ were invited, and attended the final World Cup Free Style Ski Competition prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics. It was an incredible event being there and being able to meet and talk with coaches and competitors from all over the world. It was just like being at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

With less than two lines and a goalie our school hockey teams continue to dominate both at the Junior and Senior grade levels. ACHS teams made it as finalists at the ACHS Tournament of Stars, Gold medal finalists at the Brampton Battalion Tournament and finalists again at the St. John the Baptist Tournament. With a few more students added to our program for next year we hope to do even better.

This past February we also had a chance to play against YORK REGIONS FINEST.

All our ACHS students were pumped for the game, however after being out weighed, and out muscled the ACHS students lost to the coppers 8-2. It was a great game and we are looking forward to a rematch next fall.

THANKS YORK REGION POLICE! You are the Best!

New this year at our school was the addition of our Mandarin Program. Our students so far love the program and the challenge it has provided for them. As a school we really believe that with such global changes and growth this program will be huge benefit to our students in the future.

The ACHS will be attending the HOCKEY EXPO at the international Centre this April 23-25th, 2010 along with the GTHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Toronto Marlies, St. Michael’s Majors, the Hockey News, the OMHA, and many other hockey related groups.

The ACHS under the OBHA will be starting a minor ball hockey league in Haliburton this spring and summer. After much excitement and anticipation the Haliburton ACHS Minor Ball Hockey League will play its first game
Saturday May 1st, 2010 out of the Dysart Arena and Community
Centre in Haliburton. The league welcomes both boys and girls born between 1997-2002 and hopes to field eight teams in its first year. Limited spots are still available. For more information or to register please call 705-457-5157.

At the end of this summer and beginning this fall the ACHS will be acquiring horses to compliment all its Haliburton ACHS Camp programs. This exciting major development will enhance all our Haliburton ACHS summer camp programs. More information will be given as it becomes available.

In closing I want to thank you for your continued patronage and support. I also wish that you and your family have a great summer and we look forward to serving you in the near future.

Sincerely yours,

Dear ACHS students, campers, and parents:

First I would like to wish all our ACHS families a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

At this time I would like to thank the many families who supported our various sports and educational program this past year. It is because of you and your continued support and commitment that we have been able to operate successfully in the community since 1981.

Regardless of the recession 2009 was a good year for us. Registrations increased across the board for most of our sports and educational programs. Certain programs also continue to be sold out. This year (2010) looks like it is going to be even better. Please take a few minutes to continue reading this news letter to help keep you informed and up to date with all our activities and programs.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School has had an extremely busy fall schedule. September started off with a bang as we hosted the ninth ACHS Annual Fun Run. With ten other schools in attendance St. Peter’s ACHS College School came out on top clenching the boys’ championship beating out Tall Pines elementary school from Brampton. During October our Jr. and Sr. grades attended the Body Works Exhibition with a follow up hands on session at the Ontario Science Centre. November 11th, students attended Remembrance Day Ceremonies at Toronto City Hall after which they met and had lunch with Mayor David Miller. Our school was also requested to reopen its doors to the residency program by families in the U.S.A. Having agreed, we now have four families that use the residency program at our school.

November continues to be hectic for us with our Jr. and Sr. class students driving to Haliburton to meet with members of the Royal Canadian Legion. Students also spent a day learning how to curl at the local curling club. A hockey exhibition game was also arranged where our school won their first game of the season. Last year our school did very well in hockey losing only a few games, one of them being in the Dufferin/Peel Championship finals. Currently our school has students that play for the Toronto Red Wings, the Toronto Titans, the Humberview Huskies, the Vaughan Panthers, the South Central Coyotes, the Noble Kings, the Richmond Hill Stars, the Duffield Devils, as well as the Vaughan Rangers. Former ACHS graduates include Reggie Traccitto currently playing for the Niagara Falls Ice Dogs and Nathan Chiarlitti currently playing for the Sarnia Sting.

December was just as busy for us with all our students (JK-8) attending the KING TUT exhibit at the A.G.O. Students were somewhat disappointed with the display as some of the main artifacts were left behind in Egypt. Before the end of school 2009, students put on a small musical performance at our annual Family Advent Mass and dinner. During mid January our Jr. and Sr. Class students will be off to Lake Placid. There they will attend school, play hockey, ski and participate in numerous other Olympic Activities.

February 24-25th, 2010 our school will be hosting its ninth annual hockey tournament for grades four through eight at the Sports Village in Vaughan. If you would like your school to participate in this tournament, please have one of your teachers or principal contact me directly at St. Peter’s ACHS College School. We would be more than happy to host your school’s team(s) if we have spots available.

These are just a few of the events and activities that our school participates in. Established since 1990, our school prides itself in being one of the first athletic/academic schools in the province of Ontario. Our school with its longer teaching days than any other day school in the province has an extremely high success rate with its graduating students.

Former St. Peter’s ACHS students have excelled in such schools as St. Mike’s, St. Andrew’s, Holy Trinity and Country Day School just to name a few. We are a very unique and diverse school. Our students, staff and parents truly believe in the saying: “Good things come in small packages”. For more information about our school and its program please contact us direct at 905-832-8121.

WINNER of the 2009 Autographed NHL hockey sweater this year was JACK DOBIE from Haliburton Ont.

NEW THIS SPRING
The ACHS is proud to introduce to you its Spring/Summer Ball Hockey League to be operating out of the Dysart Arena and Community Centre in Haliburton. This ball hockey league will be known as the Haliburton ACHS Minor Ball Hockey League and will be a registered member of the OBHA. We will be looking for players, coaches, referees and conveners. Additional information as well as registration forms and dates will be made available February 2010.

GETTING READY FOR THE SUMMER
Our staff is eagerly preparing for our spring and summer camp programs. Most of our camp programs were completely sold out last year. We were fortunate to have waiting lists for our March Break as well as most of our Haliburton Summer Hockey Camps, Algonquin Wilderness Camp and several of our Wilderness Paintball Camp programs.

Our hockey camps did well and brought in players from as far as the USA and Mexico. For paintball camp we even had a player from British Columbia. This summer looks like it is going to be one of our best ones yet. Our goal this year is to have all our camp programs completely sold out. So we encourage parents/players to register early to avoid disappointment.

New this year for Hockey will be our Tyke/Beginner Program and our Training Camp for selected individual players. We are confident that these additions to our regular programs will be well received.

We will be holding an Open House for both school and camp registrations Tuesday February 9th, 2010 at St. Peter’s ACHS College School from 6 – 9 pm at the address listed below. Please feel free to drop in and say hello. Our staff, parents and students would be more than happy to speak with you about any of our ACHS programs.

In closing we wish you all the best for 2010 and especially to our Olympic Athletes. Good luck and kick some butt!

GO CANADA GO!

Sincerely yours,

Peter Thyrring (Tyro) ACHS

St. Peter’s ACHS College School is an independent academic Catholic day and or residential boys school grades JK-8. Since 1990, our school with its small classes has offered an awesome and challenging academic school program using and combining religion, sports and a “hands on” approach as a part of its academic base.

Our unique program is designed specifically for boys “to put the fun back into learning” and has allowed students to progress at their own rate of speed and development. Our enriched academic program encompasses, and in many areas has surpassed the Ontario Ministry of Education School Curriculum expectations and guidelines.

Over the years many of our graduates have found success and have experienced smooth transition to high school. Much of that success is largely in part attributed to the foundations gained through the unique and individualized program offered at the St. Peter’s ACHS College School.

Location and Facilities
As of August 1st, 2011 St. Peter’s ACHS College School will reside at the Pinestone Resort and Conference Centre located in Haliburton Ontario Canada just two hours Northeast of Toronto. Situated on 160 acres the school features numerous classrooms, a library and games room, a swimming pool, tennis court, as well as access to the 18-hole golf course. Nearby Dysart Arena services the school for both its ice hockey and ball hockey needs.

Residency students reside nearby at the ACHS residency house. Residency students are well supervised by our full time house mother who ensures that our students do their home work and are well fed and rested.

Nearby ACHS Haliburton also offers horseback riding, paintballing, cross bows/archery and many other outdoor activities. Sir Sam’s ski hill is also used on a regular basis and is located less then a half hour away from the school.

Uniform
St. Peter’s ACHS College School has a designated school uniform which is to be worn in its entirety at all times. This includes a summer and winter uniform as well as a full gym uniform. Students are expected to be well groomed with natural colour hair which is not to extend below the shirt collar or eye level. Earrings and jewelry are not permitted.

House System
The House System at our school is a means of encouraging students to take an active interest in the life of the school through their involvement in academic, athletic, and artistic activities. At our school we have four houses. Each student is a member of one of these houses and will remain with that house for their entire stay at St. Peter’s ACHS College School. Everything a student does during his career at our school is representative of the house. Points are earned by students through various areas and activities and are totaled at the end of the school year. The house with the most points will be presented with the Championship House Plaque.

Ranks
A Rank Leadership System is promoted at our school. Just as sports teams have a captain and assistants all our students at our school are encouraged to achieve some form of rank status. The Rank system is set up to help other students, staff and the school, it promotes high academics and leadership skills. The rank system provides students with a mentor and teaches them to resolve conflict and problem solve as well as set goals to improve. Ranks assist in school government and are taught to help the students around them.

Testing
Students at our school are tested on a regular basis. At ACHS College School, assessment is ongoing, and is gathered from a variety of methods and observations. Parents and students receive a written report evaluating the students’ performance and achievement a minimum of three times per year. Parents are kept up to date with daily log sheets, personal interviews and phone calls.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School is actively dedicated to teaching the tenets of the Roman Catholic Faith. Students are taught Roman Catholic Doctrines, Teachings and Values. They are taught and expected to live a Catholic lifestyle, as per our religion under Christ. As part of this students are expected to attend Mass on a regular basis to help in the development of their faith.

Non Catholic students are welcome at our school and would be required to take Religion as a subject. Our school is proud to have students in attendance from various different religious beliefs. We will not force our religious beliefs on anyone that is not a part of the Catholic Denomination.

Students work independently at their own level and speed in a highly disciplined environment. We appeal to all learning styles which enables the students to work more effectively which enables students to experience greater success.

The school has integrated various teaching philosophies in education and stresses maximum hands on, and visual concepts, derived from the Montessori Foundations of education. Students have great influence in the school with regards to its policies, discipline, conduct, and program. They take ownership of their education and assist in governing the student body. At the St. Peter’s ACHS College School, students are expected to work hard and can do so with confidence in a comfortable setting.

Technology
From JK to Grade Eight, every student throughout the school uses the computer every day.
Additionally, each student receives his own laptop, which allows students to work interactively with their classroom teacher.

Older students also receive instruction in computer programming and development.

A Day in the Life of an ACHS Boy…
Class size is very important at our school. To be most effective we have set up our classes to have no more than 15 students per classroom for grades JK-2 and no more than 20 students per classroom grades 3-8. The overall student/staff ratio is 10:1. Our classes are kept small enough to ensure that students get a great deal of attention, support, and individualized instruction from their teachers.

Our school day begins at 8:15 a.m. sharp with the singing of our national anthem followed by prayers and inspection. Most mornings are devoted to the study of communication skills including Spelling, Grammar, Creative Writing, Reading, Comprehension, French, Computers, Handwriting and Math. Afternoons are usually set aside for Leadership Development, Religion, History, Science, Geography, Health, Outdoor Education and Art.

Most of our school sports take place during school hours, in order not to interfere with after-school extracurricular sports or activities.

Students at our school are able to participate or compete in hockey, skating, skiing, snowboarding, swimming, soccer, kayaking, canoeing, biking, cross country running, track and field, and golf.

St. Peter’s also hosts and attends various sports tournaments and events throughout the academic school year.
